Read on to find out which apps you should install first.

How Apple Watch apps work

At launch, Apple Watch apps will be a different breed of app, residing not on the Watch itself, but on the iPhone. The main iPhone app will use the paired Bluetooth or shared Wi-Fi network connection between the iPhone to share data between the Watch and ht iPhone. The iPhone app can send three different types of information over to the watch including:
  • Actionable Notifications: Similar to the iOS version, these notifications will alert you to new information and allow you to respond appropriately.
  • Glances: More like Widgets, Glances are always available and display short snippets of information, such as the latest score of a baseball game. You can swipe through glances as necessary.
  • Interactive app view: these interactions reside on your home screen and function more like a app, allowing you to perform basic actions or even control the main app on your iPhone.
Apps can utilize some or all of these Watch functions based on the type of app and the level of interactivity needed. All Watch-based apps will be managed through the Apple Watch app, which will have a browser that lists all installed iPhone apps with a Watch companion.
