TAG Heuer going to launch first smartwatch for $1,400

Image
TAG Heuer will start selling a smartwatch worth $1,400 towards the end of this year. The company expects to launch the smartwatch in October or November this year, with a battery life that will last for nearly 40 hours. In an interview ,  Jean-Claude Biver   from LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE — the parent company of TAG Heuer — said that the Apple Watch can potentially attract many young consumers in wearing watches for the first time. He hopes that Apple sells millions of them, so that when people want something different, they will purchase a smartwatch from TAG Heuer. “I hope they sell millions and millions and millions of them,” Biver said, speaking ahead of the official opening of a Hublot boutique in Dubai Mall. “The more they sell the more a few people will want something different and come to TAG Heuer.” TAG Heuer had announced last month that it has entered into a partnership with Google and Intel to create its first smartwatch....

Windows 10 : new UI and 3D live tiles, Screenshot leakes

Image
Some new screenshots of  Windows 10  seem to have leaked online, and the images have some new stories to tell if they are real. We get to see a revamped UI from the last time we saw what Windows 10 could be like, to new 3D Live Tiles . The images come in from a Chinese source, giving us a look at some of the unannounced changes Windows 10 could purportedly pack when it’s finally released somewhere this summer. One change that will instantly strike into every Windows user’s mind, is the return of the Aero Glass feature, or well, something close to it. Aero Glass was a transparent and blurry glass effect that was introduced with Windows Vista, and carried on to Windows 7. Windows 8 however dropped it altogether, but Microsoft is looking to bring a part of it back to Windows 10. Here you see the transparent effect on the Start Menu, but the effect does not extend to application windows as was with Windows Vista and Windows 7. Interestingly, when the Start Menu is t...

Best Buy iOS app now support Apple Pay, coming in retail soon.

Image
Best Buy  announced  today that it will begin supporting Apple Pay within its mobile app, effective immediately, and within its stores later this year. This is a major partnership for Apple, as it’s the first one with a member of MCX—the Walmart led consortium of retailers that are backing payment app ‘CurrentC.’ A Best Buy spokeswoman  told  Recode that “we remain invested in MCX,” but she would not comment on when CurrentC will be available to the public and if the electronics retailer would accept it at launch. “We are actively monitoring their pilots,” she said. “It’s too early to declare whether we will take it at launch.” MCX first gained notoriety last fall when two of its members, CVS and Rite Aid, turned off Apple Pay support after briefly accepting the iPhone-based payment system. The group has been backing the development of an app called CurrentC, a more complex mobile paym...

Only 20% of iPhone users have upgraded to an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus

Image
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have become Apple’s fastest-selling smartphones to date, but if you expect that momentum to slow down anytime soon, think again. Only 20% of active iPhone users have upgraded to one of the new devices so far, leaving plenty of room for more growth. Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed this stat during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Monday evening when one analyst questioned whether the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus still had room to grow ahead of the launch of next-generation devices this fall. Cook also noted that the new iPhones were bringing a higher rate of switchers over to Apple devices than the company had seen in previous quarters, which suggests that the bigger Retina HD displays are finally attracting users on Android and other platforms. If switchers continue to adopt the iPhone at a steady rate, and a good percentage of existing iPhone users upgrade to the latest devices, there’s still plenty of growth left in the iPhone 6 and...

Facebook Messenger launches video calling

Image
Merely a week after flipping the switch on video calling in its popular WhatsApp service, Facebook today started  rolling out  video calling to its  Messenger app on iOS  and across other mobile platforms. As you know, Messenger already offers people the ability to make voice calls to friends around the world. By enabling cross-platform video calling across the ubiquitous messaging service, which commands 600 million users, the social networking behemoth is hoping to permit users to engage in face-to-face conversations with their friends and the people they care about, regardless of a platform of their choice. Video calling in Messenger is “fast, reliable and high quality,” noted Facebook. The new feature is available via a dedicated phone icon in the upper right, as show on the screenshot below. “If you’re messaging with someone and realize that words just aren’t enough, you can simply choose the video icon in the top right corn...

Apple Watch tests show very accurate health and fitness data tracking

Image
It is an incredibly precise timepiece, a new way to communicate, but it is also a smarter way to look at fitness. Timekeeping and communication aside, early scientific and less scientific tests show Apple Watch is actually very accurate at tracking health and fitness data. Early tests conducted by  Consumer Reports  show encouraging results when it comes to tracking fitness features such as step counting and heart rate monitoring. The publication put Apple Watch to the test against its highest-rated heart rate monitor, the  Polar FT60 , and found the results to be accurate without significant differences between both devices. Although the publication didn’t detail the findings of its early tests, it did mention that it will provide more precise results in the near future. Maybe more impressive to me is the unscientific test conducted by iOS software engineer  Hannes Verlinde . A serious runner, Verlinde took his  $399 Garmin Forerunner 610 ...

Apple Watch can do Seven cool things without its paired iPhone

Image
Designed as a versatile companion to the iPhone, the Apple Watch uses the GPS and Wi-Fi in your iPhone to give you the full experience. That’s why the very first step before you can start using the Watch is pairing it to an iPhone in iOS’s Apple Watch application. But even though the wearable device wasn’t conceived as a standalone product, it can still do a few tricks on its own, without having a paired iPhone in range. Here are seven different things the Apple Watch can do without being tethered to an iPhone. Tell time and use alarms, timers and stopwatch Your Apple Watch doesn’t need an iPhone to let you use the watch face, alarms, timers and the stopwatch. This includes checking the time in cities around the globe using the World Clock app. Tip:  You can set timers up to 24 hours using the Timer app on the Apple Watch. To set a timer for longer than 12 hours, force-press the Watch screen while adjusting the timer, then tap 24. Track...

How to take screenshots on your Apple Watch

Image
If you’ve just bought an Apple Watch, and wondering how to take a screenshot then it is very simple. The principle behind taking a screenshot on the Apple Watch is the same as the iPhone, the only difference is that, in case of the Apple Watch, the  Side button acts like the Power button, and the Digital crown (the press) works like the Home button. So you need to do the following to take a screenshot: Press and hold the Side  button. Now without releasing the Side button, press the Digital Crown . Note, you can also do it the other way around, but you could end up invoking Siri. You can also do it by pressing the buttons simultaneously but I’ve found it to be more error prone. If you get it right, the screen will flash and it will take the screenshot. Unlike the iPhone however, the screenshots are not accessible directly on the Apple Watch. They’re synced to the camera roll on the iPhone, so...

Xiaomi’s New Mi 4i Looks like Apple’s iPhone 5c

Image
The infamous Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is back today with a new smartphone. Called the Mi 4i, the design, as expected, looks every bit like Apple’s iPhone 5c from the outside. In essence, the design of the Mi 4i is a simple one, but there’s no denying the fact that Xiaomi has opted to copy Apple once again – like most of its previous smartphones before this one – featuring a candy-colored polycarbonate back down to the matching volume buttons. At this point we believe that Xiaomi has completely given up when it comes to original design, and has merely opted to live out of Apple’s bread and butter. Where the outside of the device is every bit like an iPhone 5c, the insides are – thankfully – much different, and this is the only place where the Mi 4i can be told apart from Apple’s famed colorful handset. At the heart of the Mi 4i is a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, coupled with ample 2GB of RAM. The display is big enough at 5-inches and sports...

Image
Battery life is a very precious commodity on the   Apple Watch , so it is quite important to keep tabs on it, so that you can charge it before it runs out of battery. Unlike the iPhone or iPad, the Apple Watch doesn’t have a status bar where it displays the battery indicator by default. There are couple of ways you can check how much battery is remaining. Battery Glance On the Apple Watch, swipe up on the watch face to access Glances. Swipe from left to right or right to left to the Battery glance. It gives you information about how much battery is remaining, and an option to use Power Reserve mode to stretch available power. Add Battery Indicator to Watch face The other option is to add the battery indicator to your current watch face. You can add the battery indicator to Watch faces such as Modular, Color, Utility, Simple, Chronograph, and Mickey Mouse. To add the battery indicator to the Watch face, firmly press the display on the...
