Apple refreshes iTunes receipts with bigger cover art, new subject field and more

Image
With the Worldwide Developers Conference right around the corner now, both the Rumor and News Mills are quieting down, leading up to the storm of information set to arrive soon enough. For anyone that purchases quite a bit through Apple’s digital stores, there’s been a slight change to the receipts that you’ll receive after Apple finalizes your order(s). For quite some time now, Apple has made their receipts pretty straightforward, with just a series of texts outlining what a person bought, the prices and then the final total at the bottom. Nothing fancy. That’s changed with the refreshed receipt layout, though, as  9t05Mac  points out that the new receipt has a lot more character to it. That includes bigger cover art for the items purchased, including even bigger totals to look at. There’s a bit more information on the receipt, too, including what device the content was purchased from. The “Type” category is still present, informing the buyer of what type of content they boug

Jailbreak Tweak - Aeuria LS displays a stylish clock on the Lock screen

Image
One of the reasons that I crave for a jailbreak is the freedom to customize my device the way I want. There are many Cydia tweaks that will help users bring a new look to their iOS device. Aeuria LS is one such tweak that brings a stylish clock to your Lock screen. The tweak comes packed with three different clock styles that can replace the original clock on the Lock screen. These clock faces include text, digital and analog styles. Once enabled, the original Lock screen clock will be replaced with one of the circular clock faces offered by the tweak. What’s more amazing about Aeuria LS is the animation effect that takes place when you swipe the Lock screen to enter the passcode. The developer has definitely paid a great attention to detail when creating this tweak. Once you install Aeuria, head to the tweak’s preferences pane available in Settings. The pane is divided into different sections namely Clock Face, Style, Passcode Page and Other Settings. The Clock Face Settings

HBO GO for iPhone and iPad adds support for playback through HDMI output

Image
I’m an avid fan of the HBO GO service, one annoyed that their iOS application wouldn’t support HDMI output. As someone who travels fairly often but doesn’t carry an Apple TV wherever I go, it’s depressing not being able to send the latest episode of Game of Thrones from my iPhone to a TV set in a hotel room using an HDMI adapter. But if you own a Lightning to HDMI adapter and are an HBO GO subscriber, you can now hook up your iPhone or iPad to a TV set and enjoy lag-free video playback through HDMI output. In addition to HDMI output, HBO GO 3.0.1 for iOS resolves issues associated with video playback through Bluetooth audio and contains other bug fixes and performance improvements. Earlier this month, HBO GO for iOS was revamped to match the new design of the HBO NOW app for the iPhone and iPad, resulting in consistency across HBO apps and platforms. HBO GO is free with your HBO subscription through participating television providers. The 6.9-megabyte app requires iOS 7.

Samsung launches the Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man edition

Image
After teasing the  Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man edition on Twitter for a couple of weeks , Samsung has finally launched the handset in selected countries.  The Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man edition will come with its own specially designed wireless charger and a transparent back cover to protect the rear glass of the handset from scratches. It will feature 64GB of internal storage. Samsung also posted an unboxing video of the handset that gives us a clear look at the handset as well as the other accessories that it will ship with. The phone itself is primarily in a tone of red that matches the color of Iron Man’s armor, and features a Iron Man logo at the back as well. By default, the handset ships with a Iron Man theme, though existing Galaxy S6 owners can download it from the theme store as well. The handset will be available in Samsung’s home country, Korea, from May 27 where it will be offering 1,000 units of the device for sale. This will be followed by the handset’s launch Ch

Twitter finally launches Periscope for Android

Image
A couple of months after it launched the Periscope app for iOS, Twitter today announced the release of the Android version of the app. Periscope for Android packs the same features as its iOS sibling, though it does come with a few enhancements. One such feature is the “return to broadcast” option that makes it easier for users to get back to a live stream on Periscope if they were interrupted in between by a message, call or other notification. As for notifications, Android users will have the option to be notified when one of their followers starts a live stream or goes live. They can toggle notifications off, but it will be applied on a global basis and not on a per-user basis. The app only supports devices running Android 4.4 or higher, which made development significantly easier for the Periscope team over at Android. While Periscope for Android does not completely adhere to Material Design, it does borrow a few design guidelines from it. Download:  Periscope for Androi

TSMC establishing 10nm pilot line to build A10 chips for iPhone 7

Image
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC), the world’s largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry, is apparently scheduled to finish its 10-nanometer pilot production line by the end of June, with Taiwanese media  suggesting  that the new facilities will churn out an Apple-designed ‘A10’ processor said to power an ‘iPhone 7’ and other iOS devices due in 2016. According to a pair of reports by Taiwan-based UDN ( here  and  here ), TSMC will establish a 10-nanometer pilot line in a total of twelve factories located in Taiwan’s Hsinchu. Apparently, the company already started a semiconductor intellectual property program, with the goal of signing up Apple by the end of the year. This year’s iPhone and iPad refreshes should be powered by an Apple-designed A9 processor. An ‘A10’ processor is likely the engine that will power next year’s iOS devices. A month ago,  UDN reported  that Foxconn CEO Terry Gou used his influence to persuade Apple to give TSM

Next iPhone could be even thinner and lighter thanks to smaller LED backlighting chips

Image
In its never-ending quest of engineering ever thinner and lighter devices, Apple is said to use smaller LED backlighting chips that could, at least theoretically, make the next iPhone(s)—you guessed right— smaller and lighter. Citing a TrendForce report, DigiTimes said Tuesday that next-generation ‘iPhone 6s’ and ‘iPhone 6s Plus’ will adopt smaller LED chips for the display’s backlight unit. The new chips reportedly measure three mm wide, 0.85mm tall and 0.4mm deep versus the 3.0mm x 0.85mm x 0.6mm chips used in the present-generation iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices. Japan-based Nichia and Toyoda Gose will allegedly supply these LED backlight chips for the upcoming iPhones. “As such 0.4t LED chips are smaller with brightness ten percent lower than 0.6t ones, the backlight unit may need to use 2-3 more chips to reach the same total brightness,” reads the report. I’m not entirely convinced that the next iPhones will have a slimmer chassis. Apple typically re-uses chas

iOS 9 might change to iMessage, keyboard and Apple Pay with Force Touch support in the 'iPhone 6S'

Image
The next iPhone, which is already being called the “iPhone 6S,” will herald the launch of not only new hardware, but also the public launch of the next iteration of iOS, believed to be iOS 9. It could also mean the introduction of Force Touch on the iPhone, too. Now, according to a report published recently by  9to5Mac , Apple is looking to bring its Force Touch technology, which is one of the paramount features for the Apple Watch (and some MacBook trackpads), to the iPhone. The report indicates that Apple has included support for the technology in iOS 9, and that it will be accessible to those who buy an iPhone 6S later this year. The report indicates that the next iPhone will look like the iPhone 6 from 2014, so Apple will follow its own routine yet again in 2015 when it comes to yearly refreshes. Developers are reportedly gaining the ability to integrate Force Touch into App Store apps right now, and the report suggests that Apple is implementing the new feature to help cl

How to backup and restore your Apple Watch

Image
The Apple Watch has a backup mechanism that allows you to save important Apple Watch data on your iPhone. These backups allow you to reset your Watch and pick up right where you left off. Read on to find out how to create a backup and restore your Watch using this saved information. How the Apple Watch Creates a Backup Backups  are created automatically  when you unpair a Watch from an iPhone. The unpairing process erases all data from the Watch, while saving a copy of that information on the companion iPhone. The Watch then can use this data to restore it settings when it is paired again. Be sure to unpair your Watch when it is near your iPhone. If you unpair it and the iPhone is out of range, then a backup will not be created. Unpairing your Apple Watch from your iPhone You will need  to unpair  your Apple Watch using the Watch app on your iPhone. IllLookLater (Jailbreak tweek) prevent iPhone screen wake when receiving notifications

Image
Do you find that many of your incoming notifications don’t warrant the awakening of the Lock screen on your iPhone? Perhaps you think that waking up your iPhone every time you receive a notification is a waste of precious battery. If you feel that way, then you may want to look into  IllLookLater , a recent jailbreak tweak that’s available on Cydia’s BigBoss repo free of charge. IllLookLater makes it so that you can limit the amount of apps that wake the Lock screen when receiving a notification. In other words, it lets you pick and choose the apps that you deem worthy. The good thing about IllLookLater is that the notification audible alert still sounds, and like normal, your notifications will be waiting on you at the Lock screen. The big difference is that you can specify which apps have privileges to wake the screen. After installing the tweak, venture over to the stock Settings app, and tap on the IllLookLater section in the preferences. There, you’ll find a list of k

NBA Jam by EA Sports selected as IGN’s free iOS game of the month

Image
It took a little longer than usual, but IGN’s free iOS game of the month is finally here. Though the promotion is valid only in the US, UK and a few select markets, readers overseas can use an anonymizer service like  SmartHide Online Anonymizer  to visit IGN’s deals page as if there were accessing it from within the US and redeem the game. Released in the App Store back in February of 2011, NBA Jam by EA Sports has never been free so this is your chance to grab the game and save five bucks right off the bat. NBA Jam features local multiplayer mode allowing you to take on your friends on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Calculator Watch app Turns your Apple Watch into a Casio

Image
One of my favorite watch as a teenager was the calculator watch made by Casio, pretty much like the one in the image above. You can still  get one  for $15. The cool thing is that if you’re feeling nostalgic, then you can now turn your  Apple Watch  into a Casio with a new Calculator Watch app called  Geek Watch . The app brings the Casio Calculator user interface to the Apple Watch. They’ve replaced the “Casio” brand with “Geekio” to avoid getting into trouble, but as you can see it is heavily inspired by the popular calculator watch. As TechCrunch points out, since Apple doesn’t allow third-party Watch faces, you’ll still have some borders and text around the edges, without which it would have been perfect. Geek Watch is available on the App Store for $1 ( iTunes link ).You can also unlock 9 other watch models via in-app purchase. It is just a novelty, as the buttons which worked just fine on the Casio Calculator watch, are too small for a touch-screen. Also Apple Watc

iPhone 6s may feature Sony’s RGBW 12-megapixel camera sensor

Image
A report from IHS analyst from earlier this month claimed that Apple will move to a 12MP sensor for the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus. Now, the Japanese media   is reporting that Apple is indeed going to use a 12MP sensor on the next-generation iPhones that will be made by Sony. To make up for the smaller pixel size and to further improve low-light quality, the sensor will make use of RGBW pixel technology. Traditional camera sensors have RGB (Red, Green & Blue) pixels, but this new sensor from Sony will feature an additional W (white) pixel that will help it in absorbing more light, which will lead to improved low-light images. The report from Japanese media also shoots down rumors about Apple using dual-lens camera on the iPhone 6s for better image quality. Instead, the report claims that Apple will be sticking to its True Tone flash setup that it first debuted on the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 6s will not be the first phone to feature a RGBW camera sensor. How to install Xposed framework on Android 5.1 Lollipop

Image
Xposed framework has become one, if not the most popular, mods in the Android development scene. The framework when combined with modules developed by various developers allows users to customize nearly every aspect of their device.  Since Xposed interacts with Android at a very low-level, any update to Android makes the existing version of the framework incompatible with it. The release of Lollipop required the developer to write the framework from scratch which was a time consuming process. In the end though, Xposed framework for Android 5.0 was not only faster than its KitKat version, but also retained compatibility with existing modules. While the official release of Xposed framework is not compatible with Android 5.1, an XDA member was able to create a version that worked with the latest release of Lollipop. Like before, installing Xposed framework on Android 5.1 will require a rooted Android device with a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM installed. Before you jump to the
